CHAPTER HISTORY

History of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,Inc.

On December 6, 1969, 26 visionary women embarked upon a new and challenging path in their Delta lives - they established The Federal City Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Throughout the past 35 years, The Federal City Alumnae Chapter sorors have unselfishly given of their time, energy and talents to the citizens of the District of Columbia.

Some programs and projects from the early days include: "Operation I.D." for the Barry Farms community, Senior citizens activities at Garfield Terrace, Edgewood Terrace, Judiciary House Senior Citizen center, and D.C. Village, A Family Life conference, Parenting classes for teenage mothers, Health Fairs, Voter Registration programs, and tutorial and Literacy programs. In the later years, the Adopt-a-Family, Adopt-a-School and Del-Teen programs were initiated.

The Federal City Alumnae Chapter has continued its commitment to the arts, education and social action through involvement with African-American art galleries, student cultural arts workshops, the Emerging Artist program, the annual Black College tour, school trips to visit member of Congress, town meetings and voter registration information.

We continue to award scholarships each year to deserving high school seniors and conduct college prep workshops. The year 2004-2005 finds us engaged in national initiatives including the Betty Shabazz Delta Academy and the International Day of Service.

The Federal City Alumnae Chapter's fundraising projects have included the co-sponsorship of "Countdown at Kusini", the first motion picture produced by a black women's organization in 1976. There also have been automobile raffles, upscale gospel concerts, boatride/casinos, Jabberwocks, shopping trips, and New Year's Eve galas co-sponsored with Omega Psi Phi fraternity. For the past several years, our main fundraising vehicles have been Stomp D.A.T. youth step show focusing on drug, alcohol and tobacco prevention among youth and "An April Affair to Remember", an elegant dinner evening combined with fun-filled, lively activities,including our Jabberwock in April 2004.

Founded on its commitment to public service, The Federal City Alumnae Chapter's agenda continues to effect change in the metropolitan Washington, DC community while we face the challenges of a new millennium
