Guided by the mission of Delta Sigma Theta’s National Commission of Arts and Letters, which was established in 1973 by 15th National President Lillian P. Benbow and co-chaired by Honorary Members Leontyne Price and Lena Horne, the Arts & Letters Committee of the Federal City Alumnae Chapter uses the arts as a powerful tool to educate, inspire, and transform communities.
Honoring Delta’s commitment to service and social action plans and implements work designed to celebrate, preserve, and advance Black creativity, culture, and intellectual expression. Through innovative programming and strategic partnerships, the committee uplifts the arts in all forms — literature, music, visual and performing arts — while promoting literacy, cultural awareness, and community engagement. Our initiatives amplify Black voices, support Black authors and artists, and create meaningful opportunities for members and the broader community to connect through storytelling, service and artistic excellence.
We aim to honor and celebrate the legacy of Black artistry while nurturing the next generation of creators, thinkers, and leaders.

Signature Events:
Turning Pages, Changing Lives In celebration of National Reading Month and Women's History Month, the Federal City Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. hosted a dynamic literacy event at Kimball Elementary School on March 27 featuring Honorary Member Collette V. Smith. As part of the Arts and Letters Committee’s “Celebrity Read Out,” Soror Smith read from Collette’s Courage and encouraged students to dream boldly, set goals, and reject limitations. Sorors also engaged Pre-K classrooms with read-aloud sessions that reinforced early literacy and representation. The event marked the culmination of the chapter’s three-month “Reading Is Lit!” book drive, which collected more than 500 books by Black authors for distribution to six D.C. public schools. With strong leadership presence and community partnership, FCAC continues to advance literacy, inspire youth, and ensure every child sees themselves reflected in the stories they read. |
