Claudia McKoin Academy

The Federal City Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is pleased to bring to the District the Claudia L. McKoin Public Service Leadership Training Academy (McKoin Academy)!

The McKoin Academy is a FREE training academy designed to train women to lead and shape public policy in their communities. Our mission is to increase the number of women of color participating in public policy development and running for elected office. Every year, we look for bright, driven women who are ready to become part of the solution and bring diversity to the public policy and political realm. Please note that while the program is open to women of color in all eight wards, we are particularly looking for women of color in Wards 5, 7 and 8.

Building off the success of the program’s previous cohorts, the McKoin Academy will provide participants with a series of robust, comprehensive training modules covering the fundamentals of developing and running a campaign for public office.

The sessions cover the following themes:

  1. Leadership Development
  2. Campaign Fundamentals
  3. Effective Communication
  4. Direct Voter Contact
  5. Campaign Finance
  6. Fundraising
In addition to the formal programmatic sessions, participants will have the opportunity to build and expand their networks through special events that occur outside of or in tandem with the curriculum. By the conclusion of the program, the goal is to develop a cohort of more politically aware women who will use the skills and tools they have gained to:
  1. Be an effective advocate and/or catalyst for their community’s social action issues;
  2. Take more political action in their local community; and
  3. Possibly run for elected office.
